Class of 1917
Robert Julius Newton
(pictured, top row, fourth from the left)
Robert Newton's brother, George, was in the first graduating class of ATS. Robert only went to ATS for one year because he joined the army at the outbreak of World War I.
The following is excerpted from Principles and Products, a book about the Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, South Carolina. Robert, George, and their sister Annie Laurie Newton, eventually ended up at Thornwell after their parents died in 1900; and all three took some classes at ATS.
Many thanks to Finley Sutton, PSCE Class of 1977 and Director of Faith Formation and Christian Nurture at Thornwell Home for Children, for sending us this page from Principles and Products.
