Rev. O.E. Buchholz, D.D.
Professor of General Church Work
Director, Extension Program, 1921 to 1950
Rev. Buchholz began working part time at ATS in 1916. In those first five years he taught with no pay. Students affectionately called him "Dr. Bucky" when he was present and "sweet buckets" when he wasn't. He taught Christian Missions, Personal Evangelism, and he was the Director of the Extension Program. The above title appeared in a brochure that was published in the 1940's. (The Extension Department gave courses by correspondence.)
In 1923, when the school moved to 3400 Brook Road, there were five new buildings: Watts Hall, Virginia Hall, and three faculty residences. Dr. Bucky lived at 1202 Palmyra and he is the one who planted the beautiful cherry tree, which still blooms in the front yard. The students of ATS loved that tree and called it "Dr. Bucky's cherry tree." His wife and his mother-in-law, who lived with them, acted as hostesses for the many teas for the ATS students at their home.
