Rev. W. Taliaferro "Tolly" Thompson, D.D.
Professor of Christian Education, 1920-1956
In a letter from Dr. Lingle to W. T. "Tolly" Thompson dated July 15, 1920, he invites Dr. Thompson to “take part in the work at the Training School.” Dr. Lingle writes, “We would want you to teach a course in Sunday School Work or Religious Education, whichever you prefer to call it, and perhaps a course in work among Young People. I have been teaching a course in Teacher Training to the first year students. Miss Shields has been giving a course in Elementary Work to the Seniors. Miss Binford has also given a course to the Seniors in teenage work but she tells me that she will not be able to make it as extensive this year as usual. Dr. Glass has been giving a short course to the Seniors in Adult and Young Peoples Work. . . .If it is not asking too much of you, I wish that you would take the general direction of the whole subject of Religious Education for the Training School and teach some departments of it yourself and co-ordinate all the work of the other teachers in this department in such a way as to make a well-rounded course. We do not want to overload you with work, but there is a great opportunity for service at the Training School and we are anxious to have you work with us there."
Dr. Lingle continues: "You will observe that I have written in the most general terms. We can work out the details after you have indicated to me that it will be possible for you to help us at the Training School. I neglected to say that we have not been able thus far to pay salaries at the Training School, but I do hope that the church will make such a response this year in its collections that it will be possible for us to give at least a small honorarium to each teacher.”

Dr. Thompson responded in the affirmative to this letter and joined the ATS faculty in the Fall of 1920. He also joined the faculty of Union Theological Seminary during the same year.
